Mattresses are the perfect environments for Dust Mites. Dust Mites are tiny creatures that
are members of the Arachnid (spider) family. They thrive in temperatures of more than 20°C (70°F) with a
relative humidity of 60-80%. These are the conditions found almost exclusively within the mattresses you
and your family sleep on every night.
Bacteria infested flakes of dry skin from you and your pets offer Dust Mites a rich source of food. Their
reproductive rate is very high. Natural enemies, such as predatory mites, are extinct. Up to 2,500 Dust
Mites have been counted in one gram of dust. That means there are up to two million Dust Mites in one double
size mattress! Each Dust Mite excretes approximately 20 pellets of excrement a day, which contain allergens
in the form of protease enzymes. These can attack the protective lining of the nose, throat and lungs. Moving
around in bed makes the allergens airborne and easy to inhale. This stimulates the body's immune system,
triggering the symptoms of asthma and rhinitis.

More and more scientific evidence points to the fact that this Dust Mite excrement and the skeletons of dead
Dust Mites are a cause of allergies and related problems e.g. asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and inflammation
of the mucous membranes, reddening of the eyes and itching. It can also be a contributory factor to skin
diseases including dermatitis and eczema. Asthma in particular, is increasing at an alarming rate among children
worldwide and is causing widespread concern. 85% of people with asthma have been found to have an allergy to
Dust Mites.

Bacteria & Viruses
Without exception, the members of this class of microorganisms are pathogens, which can cause infections,
fever and other symptoms. These include Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Psuedomonads, Bacillus,
Fel d1, Can F1 and Coliforms. Some types of viruses have become much more aggressive in the past several
decades and many of these can be dangerous to your health. In some cases they are even resistant to
antibiotics.

Fungi and mould
These include Asperigillus, Rhizopus, Alternaria, Geotrichum and Cladosprium. Some of these spores can cause
serious allergic reactions, some of which can be fatal.

|
Flakes of dry skin
The human body sheds as much as 1.5 grams of dry skin flakes daily, more than one pound every year! People
with psoriasis lose many times more. A large amount of this dry skin ends up in the mattress and grows bacteria,
becomes rancid and causes an unpleasant smell. That typical bedroom odor!

Other residues
These include salt from perspiration, dried urine, possibly dried semen and other bodily fluids.
|
|
And from your pets...
Where pets sleep or play on a bed, they introduce many other harmful residues and microorganisms, many of which
have been collected whilst outdoors in sometimes, very unhygienic conditions.

Other areas of concern around the home
Although the highest percentage of Dust Mites and mite excrement is in the mattress, there are other areas in the
home where they can be found, and for those who suffer from Asthma, it is also important to identify these. They
are usually pillows, duvets, carpets and rugs, cushions and other soft furnishings. Treating these areas can also
be of considerable benefit to the Asthma sufferer.
